Why my wife and I aren’t waiting for New Year’s to start our resolutions

Today is the only day you can take action toward your future. Not tomorrow. Not January 1st.

My wife and I are busy people. Not only are we both raising a 18 month-old boy, separately we both are working hard to establish our careers.

She is currently finishing up pharmacy school and is in the process of applying to residencies. I have a traditional full-time job, but my side-hustle eats up most of my time.

Because we are so dead set on establishing a solid foundation for our family, we tend to get caught up in the busyness of it all and lose sight of short term goals like:

We should work out more…

We should eat healthier…

We should have a hobby together...

Each suggestion is met with the same excuse:

We’re too busy, maybe once things settle down.

Maybe you too have used this excuse before. For a lot of people, things start to settle down this time of year.

But instead of going after their goals, many people check out and enter into hibernation mode. They waste away 1/12th of their year thinking they’ll just pick back up where they left off.

This negative momentum spills over into the new year and the cycle just keeps repeating itself.

Procrastination is the worst thing you can do when it comes to going after your goals. It’s like saying, I know I should eat this healthy apple in front of me, but I’m going to wait until 4 weeks from now when I have more time.

Would you want to eat a 4 week old apple?

Probably not.

The apple is only good and nutritious in the present, not in the future. The same phenomena happens when we think about goals. The longer we prolong them, the more mold appears. Every excuse, every distraction, every obstacle grows out of proportion the longer you wait to go after a goal.

My wife and I struggle with procrastinating goals too. However, recently we’ve taken a new approach.

Don’t wait until New Year’s to start your resolutions

Launching my side-hustle wasn’t easy. Launching it with Gilmore Girls playing in the background was almost impossible.

My wife and I fell into the Netflix trap. With shorter days and cold weather, it’s tempting beyond belief to snuggle up on the warm couch and binge watch Netflix.

Our motivation, productivity, and other marital-business suffered.

Enough was enough.

We cut out all television during the weekdays. We didn’t wait. We didn’t deliberate. We simply took action.

In doing so we didn’t allow our minds to reason their way out of this goal of ours. We didn't allow the mold to grow. Limiting our screen time is always a New Year’s resolution of ours and this year we are starting a month early.

Next, with all the time we freed up from no TV, we put physical fitness back in our lives. We didn’t wait. We didn’t deliberate. We simply took action.

We signed up for Fitness Blender and started right away.

Now when New Year’s rolls around, my wife and I will have one month of healthy habits already established which we can then build upon in the new year.

Are you someone who is willing to take advantage of the head start? Or will you be like the 92% of people who fail to achieve their New Year’s resolutions?

How many times have you put off going after a serious goal of yours?

Whether it’s starting that book, or leaving your job, or climbing Everest, every day you delay is another opportunity gone.

I don’t like giving generic advice, but this applies to everyone:

You’re going to die some day.

The key word being some. You don’t know when. You don’t know how.

Every day you put off going after something you want to achieve says one of two things:

  1. You don’t think your goal is serious enough become part of your life.
  2. You don’t think your life is serious enough to embrace your goal.

You matter. Your future matters. Yet everything revolves around whether you are willing to take action today.

Don’t wait until New Year’s, don’t even wait another day. Start going after your hopes, dreams, and goals today.
