From the Shadows

“Those who travel to mountain-tops are half in love with themselves, and half in love with oblivion.” ― Robert Macfarlane, “Mountains of the Mind: A History of a Fascination”

Are you tired of living in your mountain’s shadow? You know the mountain, the one you’ve tried to ignore for years. The one, always looming on the horizon. The one, obstructing your view of the other side. The one, immense and grand. Unconquerable.

“But maybe it’s not. What if I just start…”

No. There’s that silly thought again. The one where you envision grabbing hold of the cold rock in your hands and pulling yourself up a ledge. The one where you finally start climbing the mountain.

“Never mind. It’s too tall.”

“Never mind. It’s too hard.”

“Never mind. I’ll fail.”

You turn away from these silly thoughts and go about your mundane life. You collect your paycheck. You leave the mountain behind you. But even with it toward your back, you can still sense it. The cool mountain air whispering in your ear.

You can’t ignore it. You can’t live your life without knowing. You can’t remain in the mountain’s shadow forever.

It’s time to climb.

Life is an Adventure

We all have a mountain in our life. Our mountain is our dreams, hopes, and goals all piled one on top of each other. The summit is life lived at our fullest potential. It’s a destination many of us desire, but few seek.

The reason why so many people fail to seek after their summit is fear. We fear disrupting the comfortable life we have grown accustomed to. We fear the commitment of partaking in an expedition to our summit. We fear what the climb might reveal about ourselves.

Life isn’t meant to be lived in fear. Life is meant to be lived as an adventure.

And the only way to live life as an adventure is to climb your mountain.

The mountain will test you, it will push you to the edge, it may even be too tall to summit in one’s lifetime.

None of that matters.

What matters is if you are willing to rise above its shadows. Are you willing to take the first step? Are you willing to leave behind the life you know for an adventure?

Pack Lite

“I don’t have what I need for this adventure.”

Nonsense. You have everything you need right now to start climbing. How do I know? Because up until this point, life has prepared you for it. Everything you’ve done, everyone you’ve met, every obstacle you’ve overcome has been neatly stowed away in your backpack to be used at a later time.

Not only that, you have the most unique and complex tool ever invented. Your brain. With its ability to reason, to logic, to problem solve, to learn, to adapt, and to predict, you possess the ultimate Swiss Army Knife needed for your journey.

Sure, it takes some dusting off and a bit of reprogramming, but in no time you will have the number one tool primed and ready to start climbing.

You don’t need any other special tools, tricks, or hacks to climb. You have what you need for your journey. So stop delaying.

See you on the mountain.
